John Harrowell

Record type: Motorsport Biographies

Biography: Mounts: Junior – A.J.S.
Lightweight – L.E.F.

Age 32, an engineer’s designer of Yiewsley, Middlesex, John Harrowell rode at Donington before the war and has been a regular performer at Blandford, Eppynt, Haddenham, etc., in recent days. Last year he rode a standard 7R A.J.S. in the Junior and gained a silver replica, finishing 26th at 77.46 m.p.h.
In the Lightweight he rode an L.E.F. – an ingenious 250-twin which was built by Lewis, Ellis & Foster, of Watford. The machine was basically a 350 Triumph twin, with a special built-up short-throw crankshaft which brought the dimensions to 55 m.m. bore by 52.5 m.m. stroke and the capacity to just under the 250. He was running well with this machine when he was forced to retire on the last lap.

He is entered by Lewis, Ellis & Foster for both this year’s events. His machine for the Junior is a standard 1949 “Boys’ Racer,” his lightweight model being again the L.E.F. Twin. Since last year, however, it has been rebuilt with an entirely new frame and alloy cylinder head, T.T. carburetters, etc.
