George A. Murphy

Record type: Motorsport Biographies

Biography: Mounts: Junior - A.J.S.
Senior - Matchless

Age 25, G.A. Murphy (usually known as 'Peter') comes from Helensville, New Zealand, where he is a dairy farmer.

He paid his first visit to the Island in 1953, but he has had plenty of road racing experience in his own country, including second places in the 1952 and 1953 New Zealand Junior T.T., second in the Hamilton '100' in 1952 (Junior) and in 1953 (Senior this time), second in both Junior and Senior classes of the North Taranaki race in 1952 and second yet again in the Senior class of the same event this year.

He has been racing for some siz years, and in addition to road races he also competes in grass track meetings.

In 1953 he rode an A.J.S. in the Junior T.T., finishing eight at speed of 84.39 mph and winning a silver replica. In the Senior he rode a Matchles, retiring on the last lap when lying in seventh place.

He was eighth again in last year's Junior (another 'Silver'!) and this time the Matchless went the full distance - such as it was - in the Senior race to finish 18th and add still more silverware to the growing collection.

Back in New Zealand earlier this year he was winner, on his Matchless, of the Senior New Zealand T.T., and this victory was quickly followed by the announcement of his inclusion in the A.J.S./Matchless team for 1955.
