Record type: Motorsport Biographies

Biography: Age 33, Robert Aldred Rowbottom, an electrician from Messingham, Lincs. is no stranger in the Island, though 1952 saw his first TT ride. In 1950 he ran twelfth in the Senior Clubman's and then the following year in the same event he rode a Matchless into seventh place at 76.88 mph. In the Manx Grand Prix of that year he was 17th in the Senior race.

In 1952 he rode an AJS in both Junior and Senior TT races but had the misfortune to retire in the sixth lap of each. At Scarborough he broke down in the 350 class, but was third (on his 7R) in the International 500 cc Scratch race. The hoodoo still haunted him a year later for he retired in both TT races - the third lap of the Junior and the fifth lap of the Senior, but he conquered fate in 1954 to record two good finishes. He was 28th on an AJS in the Junior TT, winning a Silver Replica and 23rd on a Norton in the Senior. In 1955 he retired in the Junior, but got a 'Bronze' in the Senior, finishing 31st. In 1956 he was entered for the Junior on an AJS and the Senior on a Norton, but was a non-starter in both owing to 'disc trouble'. Last year he was 28th in the Junior (Bronze Replica) and 37th in the Senior.
