John M. Southern
Epithet: Artist (b.c. 1857)
Record type: Biographies
Biography: John M. Southern was born in Birkenhead and by the time of the 1891 census was living in Toxteth Park with his sister, working as a self-employed artist. At present little else is known about the artist.
It is interesting to note that in 1891 some Manx artists such as E.C. Quayle and R.E. Morrison were living and working in the Toxteth Park and Bikenhead areas. It is possible that Southern knew these artists and travelled to the Isle of Man from Liverpool on holiday and during his stay painted this picture.
Art:
No other examples of J.M. Southern’s work are currently known of outside the collections of Manx National Heritage. In addition none of his works are recorded as having been exhibited on the Island.
If 'Ramsey Harbour and Market' is typical of his work, it indicates that Southern painted in oils and that his work was relatively detailed and for the period bold and colourful in terms of style and execution.
