Biography: John McGuinness was born in Morecambe, Lancashire in 1972. He began riding in motocross at 5 and was road racing by 18. He worked as a bricklayer and collected mussels in Morecambe Bay to pay for his first race bike.
From his first TT in 1996 when he won the best newcomer award, McGuinness has rapidly established himself as a top rider with 23 TT wins. One of his best performances was at the 2006 TT when he broke the outright lap record for the course four times. During the 2007 centenary TT he broke the 130mph lap barrier for the first time.
McGuinness is best-known as a road racer, but he has also competed in short circuit racing and had a podium finish at the Macau Grand Prix.
