Hexagon Patchwork Quilt (unfinished)

Date made: late 19th century

Maker: Member of Costain Family

Description: Unfinished Turkey red and white cotton hexagon quilt.

An English-style pieced patchwork quilt composed of 5 cm red and white hexagons. The white hexagons provide a background to the red hexagons with a contrasting red and white centre hexagon border. Some of the paper templates remain, sewn in place with large tacking stitches in white cotton thread. One group of red hexagons with a white hexagon centre is only partially attached. For a group of three hexagons a different textured fabric is used.

The patchwork is very small and may have been intended for use as a tablecloth, for the end of a single bed or as a cot quilt.

This quilt was made by Mrs Costain of Ballakilpheric, Rushen.
