Log Cabin Quilt
Date made: early 20th century
Maker: Member of Cain Family
Description: A small velvet and silk log cabin patchwork quilt with a wide green satin border. The log cabin squares are arranged so as to produce a pattern of alternating light and dark diagonal stripes. The dark colours are in velvet, silk and satin, the light colours in cotton, damask, silk and satin.
The quilt is backed with three widths of green satin and contains thick wadding. It is quilted with a series of multicoloured woollen knots to hold the layers of patchwork, wadding and backing together. The quilt is bound with hand-sewn running stitch in green cotton thread around the edges.
This quilt was made by the donor's mother who was the daughter of John Christian Cain, a builder from Douglas.
