Artist: Binder, Anton

Description: Watercolour sketch by Anton (Tony) Binder, an internee at Knockaloe Internment Camp 1914-1917 [?]. Received at Douglas Camp from Alexandra Palace 5.6.1917. Wrote an articles for Unter Uns and a sketch. In charge of the Scenery for the comedy 'Die Kinder' at the German Theatre, Douglas at Easter 1918. Transferred from Douglas Camp to Spalding 29.4.1918 for repatriation. Douglas Camp internee number: 4889. (MS 09310 Douglas Alien Detention Camp administration and discharge register; page 153 & M 31544 Unter Uns 8.7.1917, page 3/4.) Anton Binder also appears on the ICRC database, with Prisoner Information bureau number 43573. Nationality: Austro-Hungarian. He was transferred to Spalding and then repatriated in May 1918.

Internees were held on the Isle of Man in two camps, a requisitioned holiday camp in Douglas and a purpose built camp located at Knockaloe near Peel on the west coast of the Island. These held at their peaks over 4,000 and 23,000 men in some cases for nearly five years between opening in 1914 and final closure in 1919. Over 30,000 men passed through Knockaloe between 1914 and 1917 more than the population of Douglas the largest town.
