Artist: Goodman, Mary Anne

Description: “The roads in the Island are all parish roads, and of course, the traveller is not stopped at every turning as in England, by a turnpike. The rate of travelling is 9d. a mile, but Douglas is, I believe, the only place at which chaises or post-horses are kept.” (The Duke of Rutland’s ‘Journal of a Tour through North and South Wales and the Isle of Man’ 1797, M 02435)

A pencil sketch from the old family sketch book of Sir Arnold Wilson, the elder son of Canon J.M. Wilson. The artist was Mrs Mary Anne Goodman, an aunt of Canon Wilson, on his mother's side. Her maiden name was Pears. The sketches were made round about 1835, when Sir Arnold's grandfather, the Reverend Edward Wilson, was Principle of King William's College.
