Fort Island

Date made: 1896

Artist: Lynam, Lucy Emma

Description: "In a little Island, dedicated to St Michael, a fort was erected, with a view of defending its entrance; this is now falling to decay, but the Derby arms are still to be traced over the gate. Near the tower is a ruined chapel, in which the remains of an altar are still visible.” Nathaniel Jefferys, A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Isle of Man, 1809, M 00904)

The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
