Description: “Here it occurs to me to give a caution to pedestrian travellers in the Isle of Man, never to attempt what is called the shorter road over the mountains, as there are very few that have done so, who have not lost themselves in the thick fogs, with which the summits of these great heights are continually clouded.” (Nathaniel Jefferys, A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Isle of Man, 1809, M 00904)
The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
