Farm buildings

Date made: 1895-1901

Artist: Lynam, Lucy Emma

Description: “The next object which engaged our attention was a bevvy of country lasses, going at that early hour to Douglas Market. They were seated on small horses with panniers; one side of which were filled with the produce of their little farms and the other generally balanced with pebbles.” (David Robertson, A Tour Through The Isle of Man, 1794, M 01360)

The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
