The Calf of Man from Spanish Head

Description: "This isle is about five miles in circumference, and is environed by gloomy caverns and stupendous precipices…through the whole of this solitary spot there is no human vestige, except a mouldering shepherd’s cot…. According to tradition, this spot was once the haunt of a person who, by his splendour and affluence, had been distinguished in the court of Queen Elizabeth, but having, through an ill founded jealousy, murdered a most beautiful woman, he sought shelter here from the from the vengeance of her friends; and, amidst the caves and lonely recesses of the Calf of Man, lingered out a miserable existence of contrition and remorse.” (Nathaniel Jefferys, A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Isle of Man, 1809, M 00904)
The painting is from an album of Manx watercolours by Emily M. Fane. painted when she visited the Island in August 1843.
