Pencil sketch from internment camp

Date made: 1940

Description: Pencil sketches produced by the donor's father Alfred Schwarzchild whilst interned on the Isle of Man, 1940 (he was a professional artist, forced to flee Germany by the Nazis). Pencil sketch, partially coloured, showing a man with raised arms exhorting a crowd of men, some of whom are listening and others not. This is a more complete version of a scene which appears in at least two other sketches. Reverse plain.

Background:
There were many celebrated modern artists interned on the Isle of Man during the Second World War, they were forced to flee Nazi Germany as the regime suppressed so called ‘degenerate’ art. Jewish artists were doubly vulnerable. Manx National Heritage have an internationally significant collection of works created in the internment camps, with many of those artists going on to have high profile careers after the war.
