Portrait of Captain Harold Hindmarsh
Date made: 1940-1941
Description: An oil on canvas portrait (framed) of Captain Harold Hindmarsh, Intelligence Officer at Metropole [?] Internment Camp, Second World War. He wears service dress with General Service collar dogs and the three shoulder pips of a captain. He also wears the ribbons of the OBE, British War Medal, Victory Medal from First World War service. He was posted to the Isle of Man for duty in internment camps. He is recorded as serving at Metropole ‘S’ Camp, Douglas, when he was named in a constabulary report dated 24.7.1942 as having consented to an internee (not named) constructing a Morse Key (tapper) in the Camp Workshop. He appears on the 1939 Register as a journalist, noted as Officers' Emergency Reserve. Family information records he and his wife lived at 6 Esplanade, Douglas whilst stationed on the Isle of Man.
The portrait was painted by Wolfgang, Wolfango Hainisch, an Italian subject from Triest who was an Austrian subject at the time of his birth (1905-1995). He was a society painter in the UK in the 1930s. He is recorded at Palace Camp and Onchan Camp. In his later years he was known as Wolfgang Craig-Hainisch. He died in London.
