The President of Tynwald's wig

Date made: c.1990

Maker: unknown

Description: This wig was worn by the Honourable Noel Cringle as President of Tynwald, as part of his official uniform. The president also wears blue robes with silver decorations, displaying the three legs symbol.

The wig is of a full-bottomed legal style akin to that worn by high court judges.

The President of Tynwald presides over the Legislative Council, and when it and the members of the House of Keys sit together, over the full Tynwald Court. Although the Manx parliament is among the oldest in the world, and this wig is suggestive of great antiquity, in fact the role of President is a relatively recent innovation. The President assumes many of the powers and duties formerly held by the Lieutenant Governor, which have now passed to Tynwald.
