Paddle Steamer 'Snaefell II'

Description: Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Paddle Steamer, Snaefell II (1876), is identifiable by the distinctive three legs of man on the side of the steamer and two red funnels. She was the second IoMSPCo. vessel to be named Snaefell, out of a total of six ships which would eventually adopt the name of the Island's only mountain. Snaefell II operated until 1904.
This painting is unsigned and undated. For many of years it was attributed to Manx artist Frederick Gill, but recent research has demonstrated that this is not typical of his work and is unlikely to be by him. We now believe that it was probably painted by one of the numerous Merseyside Harbour painters, many of whom studied at the Liverpool School of Marine Art at this time.
