Bishopscourt
Date made: c.1866
Description: “The house has not all the appearance of a palace, but more resembles that comfortable sort of family house, which is generally attached to a good living in England…I half affronted a Manksman by not agreeing with him that it was the prettiest spot in the world.” (Nathaniel Jefferys, A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Isle of Man, 1809, M 00904)
Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
