Manx Cottage

Date made: Early 20th century

Artist: Hoggatt, William

Description: This pastel drawing was purchased at auction from the Leverhulme estate in 2001. Lord Leverhulme began buying art in the late 1880s to use as advertising images for ‘Sunlight’ soap. He particularly wanted paintings that showed happy images of ordinary people in humble surroundings to promote the importance of cleanliness and therefore of his household cleaning products.

Whilst Hoggatt is generally known for his broad landscape views of the Manx hills and valleys, he also produced more intimate views of farms and cottages. 'Manx Cottage' is a fine example of this kind of work. It shows a traditional Manx rural life scene with a young woman captured in a fleeting moment hurrying down a path. The spindly, twisted trees and their long shadows are otherworldly. and generally add to the romanticised view of Manx rural life.
