Cotton Framed Medallion Quilt
Date made: early-mid 19th century
Maker: Member of Collister Family
Place made: Ramsey
Description: A large geometric framed medallion patchwork quilt made of cotton and chintz. The large central panel (medallion) is made of furnishing fabric (possibly that used for bed-hangings) with a bird design. This fabric is also used on the outer border of the quilt. The central panel is set within a large diamond of blue and white striped dress fabric. There is a series of small patchwork squares arranged by colour in rows to produce a diamond pattern. The squares are predominantly blue, brown, pink, green and white. There are also white triangular and square patches, the latter set as diamonds.
The quilt is backed with a white unglazed cotton sewn together from several pieces of fabric. The patchwork is hand-quilted in a zig-zag pattern using white cotton thread. It does not contain any wadding.
This quilt was formerly used at the Collister's home at Thornhill, Ramsey and later belonged to Miss B. Clucas of Coburg Road, Ramsey.
