St Patrick's Church, Peel Castle

Date made: 1895

Description: "Peel Castle dungeon is most certainly one of the most dreadful places imagination can form: the sea runs under it, through the hollows of the rock, with such a continual roar, that you would think it were every moment breaking in upon you, and over it are the vaults for burying the dead." (Francis Grose, The Antiquities of England and Wales, 1773-1777, M 02523)

The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
