Portrait of John McClure
Date made: 1822
Artist: McClure, Inigo
Description: The 1841 Census shows only one John McClure, aged 55 and born in Scotland, he was a farmer at Ballavraw [sic], Braddan. He was living with his wife Elizabeth who was Manx and a Jane Kelly aged 79, also Manx and of 'independent means', possibly his mother-in-law (this would appear to be confirmed by an entry in the Braddan marriage register 4 April 1812 showing John McClure marrying Elizabeth Kelly). He appears on the 1851 census as a farmer of 17 acres, born Galloway, Scotland aged 66 and living at Ballaview, Braddan. He was buried at Braddan in 1859, age shown as 81 (possibly a mistranscription) and living at Ballaview, Baldwin. His wife Elizabeth Kelly was baptised at Onchan in 1789, parents Edward Kelly and Jane Moore.
