House at Castletown

Date made: August 1831

Description: On Castletown: “A place of execution, which is adjoining the town is, happily, seldom or never wanted; the spirit of the criminal laws are mild, and the following are the only persons whom I could learn have been executed. In 1735, William and James Clucas, and William Kelly, for burglary and robbery; and in 1745, John Bridson of Ballasalla, for the murder of a young woman, who was pregnant by him.” (John Feltham, A tour through the Island of Mann in 1797 and 1798, M 09791)

Sketch by John Flower (artist of Leicester) 1793-1861, 'Castletown, Isle of Man, Aug. 1831'.
