Hand-sewn Manx cat toy made by Second World War child internee

Date made: 1940

Maker: Rieger, Hans-Christophe

Description: A hand-sewn Manx cat toy, made by the donor's brother Hans-Christophe Rieger (b.1934) whilst interned as a child on Isle of Man. Donor and brother were children of Dr Julius Rieger, a pastor at a German church in London who was instrumental in arranging for Jews and anti-Nazis to flee Germany prior to Second World War. He was none the less interned himself in 1940.

Hans-Christophe Rieger recalls that although his teacher had asked the children to make teddy bears, he felt that a Manx cat would be more appropriate.
