First World War carved bone spill vase
Date made: 1918
Description: A carved bone spill vase with tulip design along stem of vase, a 'dove of peace' motif on base and Manx three legs design on reverse. The hollow bone has 'stone wall' design carved around base and a scalloped design around top rim. The carved bone sits on a wooden base (2 parts are not attached). The design and style indicates it was made at Knockaloe Civilian Internment Camp and was probably made at time, following the Armistice in 1918.
The matching pair of carved bones is from home of Thomas (Tommy) Greggor of Lyndale Avenue, Peel who was a First World War veteran (invalided out of the War after being wounded in action, blinded in one eye and facial disfigurement). Unknown if Thomas Greggor worked as a guard or member of civilian staff at Knockaloe following being injured and invalided out of active military service.
