Description: “Not far from Douglas stands the Nunnery, in a pleasant solitude…The prioress of Douglas was anciently a baroness of the Isle. Her person was almost held sacred; her power and privileges were important, and her revenue was considerable. She held courts in her own name, and tried her vassals by a jury of her tenants.” (Nathaniel Jefferys, A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Isle of Man, 1809, M 00904)
The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
