Denim Levi's waistcoat worn by an Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) fan

Date made: late 20th century

Maker: Levi's

Description: This denim waistcoat belonged to John Bass, a motorcyclist and a fan of the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) races. Bass was a keen spectator in the 1970s and 1980s.

The waistcoat has been made from a cut down Levi's jacket, and was probably worn over a leather jacket in a 'Hell's Angels' fashion. It is adorned with various sewn on cloth badges including one for Triumph motorcycles.

The TT races have long been a mecca for motorcyclists. Many visit the Isle of Man as much for the camaraderie as for the racing. The relaxed attitude of the Manx police, and the easy going atmosphere to be found among the thousands of like-minded visitors, draw bike fans from France, Germany, Switzerland and even further afield.
