Victory Mountain

Date made: 1941

Artist: Miller, Harold 'Dusty'

Description: Satirical cartoon drawn for Isle of Man Times newspaper. Shows a farmer (First Lord of the Admiralty) leading a horse (British public) to top of hill for view of Italian towns captured in North Africa (Sidi Barani, Solum, Bardia, Benghazi).

This cartoon appeared on 1 March 1941, with the caption "Well there ain't much cheese up here, but there's a lovely view." The newspaper also carried a report that cheese was in short supply on the Isle of Man. Cheese was also in short supply in the UK because of the British government's desire that it should be reserved for manual workers.

The First Lord of the Admiralty at this time was A.V. Alexander, a Labour MP. His radio broadcasts and public appearances boosted morale and made him very popular inside and outside the services. As a working-class politician in a top position, he was an important figure for national unity. The Isle of Man Times reported on 22 February 1941 on a broadcast speech in which he made reference to the increase in food prices and even stricter rationining, but saw no prospect of either being relaxed while the war in the Mediterranean continued.
