Description: Watercolour sketch 'In the P.o.W. Kitchen - A Few Minutes Before Dinner' by George Kenner painted whilst interned in Knockaloe civilian internment camp. Mounted on a black backboard with a white handpainted, lettered title (done by the artist). View of Knockaloe Civilian Internment Camp showing the inside of a kitchen hut with a series of large boilers with chimneys, flues for cooking large quantities of food (large cauldrons with lids) and ranges along centre of hut with tables, work benches along sides by windows with food stacked up. In foreground are large tin pots, cans with lids to hold the rations, food. Several men dishing up food into cans and also from cauldrons. Washing lines with drying clothes, cloths along one side of hut by open windows and shelves with pots and pans along back wall. Large electric lights have metal shades.

Background:
During the First World War (1914-1918) the Isle of Man was used as an internment base for civilian ‘enemy aliens’. They were held in two camps, a requisitioned holiday camp in Douglas and a purpose built camp located at Knockaloe near Peel on the west coast of the Island. These held at their peaks over 4,000 and 23,000 men in some cases for nearly five years between opening in 1914 and final closure in 1919. Over 30,000 men passed through Knockaloe between 1914 and 1917, more than the population of Douglas.
