Amberley

Date made: 1906

Artist: Knox, Archibald

Description: A stark and minimalist watercolour by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of the high curtain walls of Amberly Castle in Sussex, painted in solid blocks of colour. Knox's watercolour sketches can be seen as exercises in capturing the light and a single moment in time and the light and shade can be seen dramatically caught in that one moment on the castle walls. Unlike most of his watercolour sketches which are untitled and unidentified views, Knox identified this as 'Amberly' and signed and dated it 'Knox. Sept 06'.
