The Cloven Stones Laxey

Date made: 1894

Artist: Dryden, Henry

Description: “These stones appear to be druidical or may perhaps mark the burial place of some distinguished warrior. Mr Milburne informed us that about seven years since he, with two or three of the miners opened this mound to the depth of five feet and discovered a human skull and some thigh bones which from their uncommon size must have belonged to a person of gigantic stature. The skull fell into two parts on being exposed to the atmosphere.” (Samuel Dukinfield Swarbreck, Tour through the Isle of Man by Captain William Latham, July 1815, M 07398)
