Bishopscourt
Date made: 1854
Description: "Within a mile of [Kirk Michael] is the residence of the Bishop, a fact which amounts to proof, probably, that the spot is not the worst in the island. The edifice is plain and unpretending, situated at the termination of an avenue of sycamore trees, adjoining the main road from Ramsey." (Sir George Head, A Home Tour of Various Parts of the United Kingdom, 1837, M 02445)
Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
