Manx Landscape
Date made: n.d.
Description: “The ocean on one hand, with the ships steering different courses, and the cavern grottos worn in the high cliffs, on the other, contribute to form a scene at once awfully grand, and pleasingly romantic.” (Mrs Margaret Lee ‘Clara Lennox or Distressed Widow: a novel’ 1797, M 02965)
Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
