Ballaugh Old Church

Date made: 1896

Artist: Lynam, Lucy Emma

Description: “In the graveyard attached, a small but most exquisitely carved runic cross is to be found, a memorial of ‘Thorlaf Thorjolfsen to his son Olaf’…Its church-walls and gateway, however, are fast tottering to decay, and the day cannot be long distant when it must be demolished for safety.” (Dr Robert Paterson, Manx Antiquities, 1863, M 02321)

The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
