Laxey

Date made: 1895

Artist: Lynam, Lucy Emma

Description: “We descend to Laxey, a village at the foot of a long glen headed by Snaefell mountains. One pretty gentleman's cottage. Bridge and rocky bay, a few boats and bleaching ground.” (Dorothy Wordsworth, Journal of a Tour in the Isle of Man 11th July, 1828, M 08236)

The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
