Ramsey Harbour

Date made: 1899

Artist: Lynam, Lucy Emma

Description: “The vicinity of Ramsey is by far the most beautiful part of the Island and the town, with its surrounding scenery, strongly reminds the traveller from the south [of England] of the villages used as bathing places on the coast of Devonshire.” (Nathaniel Jefferys, A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Isle of Man, 1809, M 00904)

The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
