Patchwork Quilt
Date made: late 19th century
Maker: Moore, Jane Anne
Description: Large patchwork quilt with a central pattern of printed cotton chintz. The printed furnishing fabric has a beige background with red foliate columns and three vignettes (pictures) including 'The rose and the ring', a young couple, the man holding a rose and the woman a ring. The central panel is bordered by a rectangle of beige cotton (casement cloth). Two sides have borders of a blue, pink and beige floral chintz fabric. These borders are worn, with one repaired with tape.
The quilt is backed with a mixture of coarse and fine linen sheets, and is hand-quited in a zig-zag pattern. The quilting is only visible on the top side of the quilt in the central panel and chintz border, suggesting that the plain cotton may have been added later as a restoration measure.
The backing is marked in ink with the names 'Jane Ann Moore 9.1881' and 'T. Taubman 3.1881'.
