Frosty morning in a Manx Glen

Date made: 1920s-1930s

Artist: Hoggatt, William

Description: Frosty Morning is a typical large oil painting by Hoggatt of a classic Manx landscape. It depicts a view less than a mile from Hoggatt’s home in Port Erin. A horse and cart slowly trudges up the hill in the foreground and a herd of cattle meander along the lane in the background, going to or from milking. Hoggatt has captured a working agricultural scene on an autumn morning, the almost bare trees cling onto their few remaining golden leaves. The slow rhythm of the Manx rural landscape can be seen in many of Hoggatt’s works.

Despite the evocative title, there is little sense of either cold or frost. We might be forgiven for looking at this painting with a degree of nostalgia, depicting as it does a timeless and almost idyllic rural world long since lost.

Hoggatt lived for most of his life on the Isle of Man in a cottage on the road leading up to Cregneash and the Mull peninsula. He mostly painted scenes within walking distance of his home, such as views across Port Erin to Bradda Head and Fleshwick Bay. In order to travel further afield he would prevail on fellow artists to drive him on painting expeditions around the rest of the Island.
