King William's College cricket cap and blazer, worn by H.V.G. Kinvig
Date made: 1916
Maker: unknown
Description: This cricket cap and blazer were awarded by King William's College in 1916 to H.V.G. Kinvig, who represented the school in the cricket first XI that year. The sporting ethos was strong in public schools, and these institutions played an important role in the First World War in taking young men from well-to-do backgrounds and turning them into potential officers. King William's College was no exception to this rule, and a high percentage of its former pupils were commissioned as officers. In 1918, less than two years after wearing this blazer, Kinvig was gazetted as a second lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery.
