Cotton Framed Medallion Quilt
Date made: 19th century
Maker: Gibb, Janet Douglas or Mary
Description: An appliquéd cotton patchwork quilt with a framed pattern of a central square surrounded by alternating bands of plain and diamond (squares set as diamonds) borders. The quilt is predominantly white, red, pale green and beige in colour, although all the colours appear to have faded from their original vibrancy. The fabric patterns include stripes, sprig patterns, plain and floral fabrics. The corners each have a printed square with a green decorative border and the inscriptions: 'Looking unto Jesus', 'I will give you rest', 'Seek ye my face, thy face Lord will I seek' and 'Hear my prayer oh Lord, I will hear their cry'.
The individual pieces of fabric have not been sewn together as a patchwork top but have been appliquéd individually onto slightly larger pieces of white cotton fabric which have then been sewn together. The back of the quilt therefore appears as a plain white patchwork quilt rather than a large backing sheet.
This quilt was made by a member of the Gibb household at The Grove, Ramsey. It may have been made either by Janet Douglas Gibb or Mary Gibb, aunts of the last Misses Gibbs of The Grove.
