Description: This is an example of a piece of Goss china, bearing the arms of the Borough of Douglas. It was the sort of item purchased as a holiday souvenir by the many summer visitors who stayed in the Isle of Man's capital during the holiday season.
The object is made of white china, with clear glaze over a transfer print. Goss designs were often based on real objects which visitors would have encountered in that locality, often archaeological items. This is described as a 'model of Old Manx Pot at Peel' and is probably a representation of a Manx crock or cauldron.
Goss crested china was popular before the First World War and in the 1920s. Goss items were sold through only one licenced retailer in each town or village in Britain. In Douglas the appointed agent was J.Clague, whose shop, Clague’s China Rooms, was on Strand Street.
