Cotton Framed Medallion Quilt

Date made: late 19th-early 20th century

Description: A large cotton framed medallion patchwork quilt made in a geometric framed pattern. The quilt is predominantly white, pink, pale blue and tan with highlights of red-based patterns. A wide variety of patterned fabrics are used including checked, striped, floral, sprig, plain, lattice or trellis, together with pictorial fabrics. The range of fabrics suggests that the maker had access to a book of fabric samples, especially given that several of the patterns are repeated in different colour ways.

The quilt is backed with white cotton and is un-quilted. A single line of machine stitching in white cotton thread provides binding around all the sides. The quilt does not contain any wadding.
