Kilkenny Hoard coins

Date made: 1302-1327

Maker: unknown

Description: These three silver coins (front and reverse shown) are from a hoard of over six hundred. Although they were found in the Isle of Man, the coins were minted in Scotland, England and Ireland.

They show representations of Edward I of England and Alexander III of Scotland and contain more than 80% silver content.

The Isle of Man has been seen as a strategic prize by both Scotland and England over the centuries. In the space of less than fifty years at the end of the 1200s, the Island was ruled by four different kings from three different countries. The burial of this hoard of coins showed that people were in fear for their belongings in an unsettled society.
