Description: A gold brooch with a single opal. The brooch was designed by Archibald Knox for the jewellery range at Liberty & Co. of London.
Archibald Knox designed this brooch in the early 1900s for the jewellery range of London based department store, Liberty & Co. Knox was an internationally celebrated artist and foremost designer of the art nouveau movement. His Island home strongly influenced his art and his career.
In the 1890s he left the Isle of Man to teach in an art school in London, and this was when his association with Liberty & Co. began. The department store specialised in exclusive designs for an upmarket clientele, and Knox became one of their lead designers. His work for Liberty included designs for metalwork, ceramics, fabric patterns and wallpaper designs. Nearly all of his designs took inspiration from the unique culture and heritage of the Isle of Man.
