English-style Pieced Quilt

Description: A large cotton pieced cotton patchwork quilt with a geometric framed pattern surrounding a central panel of four squares, each with a diagonal cross. The quilt is in a variety of colours and prints, though predominantly red and pink, it also contains pale green, pale blue, yellow and white.

The quilt is backed with patched white cotton and is hand-quilted in a zig-zag pattern with white cotton thread. The quilting becomes more erratic in the patched areas with the original quilting having been stitched over. The quilt is bound with one line of hand-stitching in white cotton thread and does not contain any filling.

The patchwork quilt originally belonged to the donor's grandmother's family, the Kerruishs of Castletown. Her grandmother became Mrs Henry Cregeen of Port St Mary, the coal merchants. The quilt is thought to have been made by Mrs Cregeen or by her and her sister.
