Woollen 'Tailor's' Quilt

Date made: early 20th century

Description: A woollen tailor's quilt made from small rectangular pieces of woollen fabric from tailor's cuttings. The small rectangles of suiting fabric are each 6½ cm wide though vary in length. The quilt contains a mixture of tweeds and finely woven woollen fabrics. The dominant colours are green, grey and navy blue, with some black, brown, beige and dark purple woollen fabrics.

The quilt is backed with several pieces of blue linsey-woolsey fabric and is machine-quilted in horizontal lines using navy blue cotton thread. The quilt is bound on all sides by one line of machine stitching in dark blue or black thread and does not contain any wadding.

The quilt was made by Eleanor Margaret Cowell of Foxdale, mother of the donor, before her marriage which took place in 1925.
