Woollen Framed Medallion Quilt

Date made: early-mid 20th century

Description: A woollen framed medallion patchwork quilt with a framed pattern of concentric squares and rectangles surrounding a central panel. The central panel of red woollen blanket cloth (now faded) is surrounded by four lengths of grey tweed with red squares in the corners. The quilt is in greys, purples and navy blue with red highlights. It is a mixture of plain and patterned fabric, including wool, tweed, silk, satin and cotton.

The quilt is backed with three pieces of white cotton and is hand-quilted using navy or dark grey cotton thread in a series of erratic curves. The quilt does not contain any wadding.

The exact history of this quilt is unknown but it is thought to have been made sometime in the 1920s to 1940s.
