Peel Castle

Description: This atmospheric painting is thought to be one of the earliest oil depictions of Peel Castle. It has been painted from the east, and shows a creek between the viewer and the Castle. To the modern eye the view is quite unusual, with the artist potentially omitting or altering the perspective to achieve the desired composition. To the foreground there is a small plank bridge, alongside two horses and a fishing boat. It is a highly accomplished painting.
The work has been attributed to talented British landscape artist, Frederick Parker, who was known to have specialised in castles. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1845 and 1847. The painting was originally owned by one of the Earls of Yarborough (Isle of Wight and Lincoln), but we do not know how it came to be in their possession.
