Hexagon Quilt

Date made: late 19th century

Description: Turkey red and green or blue hexagon patchwork quilt, the centre of which is composed of a grid of rosettes (made of hexagonal pieces) each with a red central hexagon. The quilts contains a variety of colours, including green, blue, mauve, yellow, white and red, with patterns of stripes, sprigs, floral, etc. Surrounding the large central panel is a border of striped green, black and white fabric. The outer border of the quilt is a band of hexagons or rosettes and a wide Turkey red border around the edge.

The quilt is backed with plain white cotton and is ornately hand-quilted in white cotton thread. Several different quilting patterns are used. The hexagonal centre and border is quilted in a hexagonal pattern, whilst the surrounding green border is quilted with an intertwined rope pattern. The red outer border is quilted with a triangular pattern, with a flower set in a diamond in each corner of the quilt. This is an unusually complicated quilting pattern for a Manx quilt, which tend to be quilted in a simple zig-zag pattern. The quilt appears to contain a thin layer of filling.

The quilt belonged to Mrs Annie Devereau nee Quayle and is said to have been sewn by one of her aunts.
