Description: This oil painting on canvas shows the view from the foreshore at Douglas, by the Tower of Refuge in 1887. The Tower of Refuge is shown as a large monumental building in the centre of the picture, with one single masted boat with pennant anchored in mud in the foreground. There is a rowing boat anchored nearby.
There is also a seated figure on rocks, in the foreground of the painting - perhaps an artist or a sailor with newspaper. To the right-hand side, there are three fishermen fishing off the pier - and dotted around the scene are two parties of visitors being rowed across the bay, four oarsmen in a boat, an IoMSPCo vessel and several white sailed yachts. Onchan Head can be seen in the background to the left.
One of a pair of oil paintings by little known maritime artist R. Teare. All his surviving artworks are scenes painted from Manx shores. Probably an amateur local artist, his naïve works provide intriguing and charismatic insights into life in Douglas Bay in the 1880s.
